Gardenia jasminoides, commonly known as gardenia, cape jasmine, or cape jessamine, is a medium to large shrub or sometimes a small tree. It frequently has a bushy appearance, with ovate, elliptic, or lance-shaped, glossy, deep green leaves that are typically 10 cm or longer and usually borne in whorls of three. Often grown in its double-flowered variants, this evergreen flowering plant from the coffee family Rubiaceae features large, fragrant, white funnel-shaped flowers.

Gardenias are known for their attractive glossy leaves and exquisite, highly scented flowers. Despite being somewhat challenging to grow, they reward gardeners with intoxicating perfume that fills the surrounding area. The perfectly formed, rose-like ‘waxy’ white flowers are often used in bridal bouquets and are supported by rich green, glossy leaves, forming a beautifully rounded plant. Delivered in bud and flower, gardenias make delightful houseplants.
