This slow growing cactus from Mexico goes by many names. The Echinocactus, comically coined the Mother in Law’s Cushion, it’s formed by a barrel shaped stem which protrudes deep yellow protective spines.  Like most cacti they’re drought tolerant and need very little care and attention to grow well. Not enough sunlight and over-watering are common mistakes. Best placed in a conservatory or patio bay, the plant is hardy and can survive most weather conditions. Although temperamental, they can grow bell shaped yellow flowers in the right conditions, which adds a vivid contrast to the fierce looking cacti. Very prominent the Echinocactus makes a striking addition to any home or garden, or maybe even the exotic gift you’ve been searching for, for your Mother in Law.

Golden Barrel Cactus is Spherical, eventually elongating cactus with a bright green stem bearing 20-40 sharply angled ribs. Yellow areoles produce golden yellow spines. Bears bright yellow flowers, 4-6cm long, in summer. Height 60cm, Spread 80cm. Native to Central Mexico.
